The FreeWill Story

FreeWill was created in 2017, when two students at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business had an epiphany: two-thirds of Americans didn’t have an estate plan due to perceived cost and complexity, but gifts from estate plans accounted for the biggest gifts charities ever received.

Could getting nonprofits involved and invested in growing access to estate planning be the secret sauce for removing the cost barrier, prompting more Americans to do their wills?

FreeWill created a comprehensive, BBB-accredited online estate planning tool designed to meet the needs of most Americans in all 50 states. Thanks to FreeWill’s partnerships with more than 1,500 nonprofits to help them fundraise in a variety of ways, the cost of using FreeWill’s platform is entirely free to consumers.

Almost a decade and more than one million estate plans later, the answer is a resounding yes.

Estately’s Origins

As FreeWill grew in popularity and offerings, co-founder Jenny Xia Spradling met with a former colleague who consulted for many of the largest financial advisory firms in the U.S., and posed the question: “What does estate planning look like for the typical financial advisor client?”

With one little question, the floodgates opened:

A list of quotes, which say:

"The financial advisor has worked so hard to build up a life time of assets and gets boxed out of a critical piece of the financial picture. The last chapter."

"The state-by-state laws are confusing."

"Financial advisors want to help but don't know how."

"Sometimes there isn't a good attorney to recommend for a client in a specific state."

"It's a black box."

"Usually all this results in estate planning not getting done."

FreeWill had already transformed how consumers directly interact with estate planning, but with this conversation over breakfast, Jenny realized access to law wasn’t just an issue for the average American, it was a persistent headache for advisors serving mass affluent and high-net-worth clients, too.

Jenny knew that advisors and the clients they serve would need a different product. Who better to solve the problem than the team already responsible for democratizing estate planning at the ground level?

The FreeWill team went to work, and Estately was born.

“Estately helps advisors and their practices deliver exactly what clients and their heirs are looking for.”

Estately leverages the scale and learnings FreeWill has developed from assisting more Americans than any other platform with their estate plans, allowing it to offer advisors of all sizes a differentiated, best-in-class product.

Using Estately, users have access to legally valid documents across all 50 states and Washington, D.C.
